Le premier conduit Stendhal \u00e0 privil\u00e9gier le sourire, plein de sympathie pour la personne raill\u00e9e. <em>Le Misanthrope<\/em> l\u2019invite \u00e0 une critique du rire o\u00f9 l\u2019attention aux autres \u00e9clipse le propre plaisir des rieurs. Pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment le roman, mieux que la com\u00e9die, laisse s\u2019\u00e9panouir le lyrisme du moi. \u00c0 l\u2019exemple de Cervant\u00e8s, Stendhal per\u00e7oit aussi dans le ridicule un probl\u00e8me du roman, surtout quand il est roman d\u2019amour\u00a0: ironie \u00e9pique, h\u00e9ro\u00ef-comique et ironie romanesque se superposeront dans son \u0153uvre. Cette approche le met \u00e0 la crois\u00e9e de diff\u00e9rentes traditions, parfois en porte-\u00e0-faux avec le romantisme. L\u2019\u00e9gotisme, la chasse au bonheur, l\u2019\u00e9nergie, l\u2019amour font tous une large place au ridicule comme \u00e0 un enjeu du plaisir et du bonheur beylistes, autant dire de son esth\u00e9tique.<br \/>\nLe h\u00e9ros stendhalien oppose ses ridicules singuliers aux ridicules communs. Ses chutes de cheval et autres accidents humiliants rel\u00e8vent de la gr\u00e2ce. On peut reconna\u00eetre une nuance entre le ridicule au masculin et le ridicule au f\u00e9minin, celui des h\u00e9ro\u00efnes naturelles.<br \/>\nLe naturel est justement une obsession de Stendhal dans son style m\u00eame. Cela peut l\u2019amener \u00e0 laisser la place \u00e0 l\u2019accident et \u00e0 l\u2019incorrection, par exemple avec le motif r\u00e9current de la faute d\u2019orthographe. La gr\u00e2ce dans le comique, c\u2019est aussi la rencontre harmonieuse du s\u00e9rieux et du non-s\u00e9rieux (celle de l\u2019op\u00e9ra bouffe), ou encore la r\u00e9versibilit\u00e9 vertigineuse et impr\u00e9visible des d\u00e9finitions du ridicule.
