Dans chaque ouvrage ou r\u00e9cit il rajustait sa mani\u00e8re au contexte socio-litt\u00e9raire du moment, contexte qu\u2019il observait avec beaucoup d\u2019acuit\u00e9. Le montrent les analyses ici de certains th\u00e8mes, structures et strat\u00e9gies des romans et nouvelles, d\u2019<em>Armance<\/em> (dont les richesses sont encore m\u00e9connues) au <em>Rouge et le Noir<\/em> et \u00e0 <em>La Chartreuse de Parme<\/em>. Avec la m\u00eame lucidit\u00e9, Stendhal savait exploiter les conventions typographiques pour rendre sa page soit discr\u00e8tement subversive, soit \u00e9l\u00e9gamment musicale. Bien plus, si l\u2019on sait qu\u2019il avait pr\u00e9lud\u00e9 \u00e0 son m\u00e9tier de romancier en publiant sur la peinture et la musique, l\u2019on conna\u00eet moins le r\u00f4le non n\u00e9gligeable qu\u2019il a jou\u00e9 dans les d\u00e9bats contemporains sur ces deux arts, de m\u00eame que sur leurs rapports possibles avec la cr\u00e9ation litt\u00e9raire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">C.W. Thompson est professeur \u00e9m\u00e9rite de litt\u00e9rature fran\u00e7aise \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Warwick (Royaume-Uni).
