Sa nomination \u00e0 un poste diplomatique subalterne \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tranger modifie \u00e9galement les conditions d\u2019exercice de son activit\u00e9 litt\u00e9raire. Il laisse derri\u00e8re lui <em>Le Rouge et le Noir<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; letter-spacing: -0.3pt\">, dont il esp\u00e8re qu\u2019il sera un billet gagnant \u00e0 la loterie de la gloire. Il lui faudra du temps pour s\u2019acclimater \u00e0 la nullit\u00e9 poisseuse de Civitavecchia, pour organiser sa vie entre la morne besogne consulaire et les bouff\u00e9es d\u2019oxyg\u00e8ne que lui offrent ses escapades \u00e0 Rome aupr\u00e8s de ses amis ou de sa ma\u00eetresse, et pour se lancer dans des entreprises d\u2019\u00e9criture ambitieuses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Texteavecretrait\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt; line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; letter-spacing: -0.3pt\">En mars 1833, la d\u00e9couverte des manuscrits romains lui ouvre un filon qu\u2019il exploitera jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la fin : celui des nouvelles italiennes, qui sont certes au go\u00fbt du jour et donc commercialement rentables, mais qui l\u2019autorisent \u00e0 chanter dans son arbre g\u00e9n\u00e9alogique fantasm\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Texteavecretrait\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt; line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; letter-spacing: -0.3pt\">C\u2019est pourtant, \u00e0 distance et avec un recul quasi clinique, la France du <em>plus fripon des Kings<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; letter-spacing: -0.3pt\">, du roi Louis-Philippe I<sup>er<\/sup>, qu\u2019il se propose de \u00ab scanner \u00bb, dirions-nous aujourd\u2019hui, dans les rouages intimes de sa machine sans \u00e2me, son personnel corrompu \u00e0 tous les \u00e9tages, ses opposants d\u00e9risoires. <em>Lucien Leuwen<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; letter-spacing: -0.3pt\"> sera le roman-somme d\u2019un r\u00e9gime, celui de la m\u00e9diocratie d\u00e9sormais install\u00e9e aux \u00ab affaires \u00bb (dans tous les sens du terme). Ce roman de la boue contemporaine, dont, comme partout chez Stendhal, un jeune homme de qualit\u00e9, en qu\u00eate de sens et de valeur, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire d\u2019amour, essaie de ne pas se laisser \u00e9clabousser, \u0153uvre d\u2019un fonctionnaire du syst\u00e8me qu\u2019il d\u00e9nonce, ne sera abandonn\u00e9 que parce que l\u2019essentiel avait \u00e9t\u00e9 dit. \u00c9videmment impubliable en un temps o\u00f9 des \u00ab lois liberticides \u00bb b\u00e2illonnent la presse et l\u2019\u00e9dition, il restera dans les tiroirs de M. le consul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Texteavecretrait\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt; line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; letter-spacing: -0.3pt\">En 1855, Romain Colomb (le cousin et ex\u00e9cuteur testamentaire de Stendhal) publie les dix-huit premiers chapitres de ce roman, \u00e9tablis d\u2019apr\u00e8s la copie dict\u00e9e revue par l\u2019auteur en vue de l\u2019impression, sous le titre du <em>Chasseur vert<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; letter-spacing: -0.3pt\">. Pour la premi\u00e8re fois, la pr\u00e9sente \u00e9dition revient \u00e0 la source de l\u2019\u00e9criture stendhalienne en donnant l\u2019int\u00e9gralit\u00e9 du texte du manuscrit autographe r\u00e9dig\u00e9 et corrig\u00e9 entre mai 1834 et novembre 1836 et en permettant de prendre connaissance, en bas de page, des remarques not\u00e9es dans la marge par l\u2019\u00e9crivain au fil de la composition de son \u0153uvre \u2014 ces marginales, qui peuvent \u00eatre strictement intimes (emploi du temps, humeur, \u00e9tat de sant\u00e9 du consul), renseignent surtout sur la m\u00e9thode de travail du romancier. \u00c0 la suite du manuscrit autographe, on trouvera la version du <em>Chasseur vert<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; letter-spacing: -0.3pt\">, ainsi que des Appendices regroupant \u00e9bauches, plans, pilotis, passages retranch\u00e9s, etc. Mis en corr\u00e9lation, ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments invitent le lecteur \u00e0 suivre pas \u00e0 pas le fascinant processus de la cr\u00e9ation litt\u00e9raire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"C8jal8\" style=\"margin-top: 6pt; text-indent: 0cm; line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'\"><em>Nouvelle \u00e9dition \u00e9tablie par Yves Ansel, Philippe Berthier et Xavier Bourdenet. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"C8jal8\" style=\"text-indent: 0cm; line-height: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'\"><em>N<sup>o<\/sup> 13 de la collection.
